Our next Sapphic Circle meeting is Thursday October 24, 2024 at 5pm PST/8pm EST.
Womontown - A Radical Lesbian Neighborhood
This month we'll be watching and discussing the 30-minute documentary on Womontown, an intentional urban lesbian community in Kansas City, Missouri. Organized in 1990, and transforming 14 city blocks in the Longfellow neighborhood into a revolutionary community by and for women, this documentary shows us what's possible when lesbians come together to build community and live their visions.
Fed up with harassment and housing discrimination, lesbians in 1990s Kansas City dreamed of a place where they could 'walk hand in hand, freely down the streets'. So they created Womontown. The radical enclave encompassed 12 city blocks and attracted women from all over the U.S (Bailey, 2022).

Some Questions To Consider
- Why was creating a community like Womontown important?
- What can we learn from Womontown? Is it possible to build similar communities today?
- Have you considered living in a lesbian community (i.e., on lesbian land, in a lesbian cooperative, or shared lesbian living situation)? What excites you about such lesbian collectivities? What makes you ambivalent or uncertain about living in such communities?
- What intentional lesbian communities do you know of or have you been a part of? What did you learn from these communities about what worked and didn't work in building lesbian community?
