Only a few times in history have women been in a position to separate from the rest of society in order to describe the world as we see it, and our needs. - Judy Grahn
"Without a visual identity, we have no community, no support network, no movement. Making ourselves visible is a political act, making ourselves visible is a continual process." - Joan E. Biren
"If there’s one thing that all lesbians have in common, it’s the ability to say
“no” to coercion. Tell a lesbian not to do something, and she'll turn right
around and do it. That’s the essence of the lesbian." - Julia Penelope
Because these events were women-only and private, lesbians flocked to them in droves and recreated them locally. Given the political climate for lesbians, there were very few places they could vacation without fear of being outed as homosexuals.
