The Voting Power Of Women In Canada
Data shows that in the 2019 General Election, in almost all age groups, women outnumbered men in voter turnout. Overall, 3% more women voted than men in that election. Of the total potential first time voters that year, 55.7% of women voted, verses 49.7% of men. The province or territory where female voters outnumbered men most significantly were Nunavut, where 5.3% more women voted and Newfoundland and Labrador, where 4.6% more women voted.

Feminism is opposition to woman hating in order to achieve a truly egalitarian society. And there can't be any women's movement that is rooted in political defenses of woman hating (Dworkin, 1987).
What Issues Are Feminists Thinking About, As They Head To The Polls?
Tackling male violence against women has always been a priority for feminists, both domestically and globally. One of the issues that has been brought up consistently in the last few years is femicide, many in Canada believing it should be a specific criminal offense or a hate crime. Mark Carney, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, has mentioned classifying femicide as, "a constructive-first degree murder offence." Similarly, the issue of a lack of support for victims and a lack of follow through on criminal sentencing in cases of male violence against women in the home has been brought up over and over since these rates skyrocketed during COVID. Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Pierre Poilievre is, "pledging to create a new criminal offence of assaulting an intimate partner," should he become Prime Minister.
Another topic on which feminists have historically been very vocal is financial support for women and in particular, mothers. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he planned to expand the current $10-a-day daycare program that already exists. Access to healthcare is another topic of hot discussion as we head to the polls, and this is a particular concern for feminists, as we know that when there is a lack of institutional care available, it is women who take time off of work to care for family. The Green Party of Canada has unveiled a, "Bold Plan to Expand Universal Public Healthcare," just last week.
